Arizona law recognizes three classes of social workers: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW). The requirements are as follows:

Arizona LCSW

Arizona LCSW Education Requirement: Master of Social Work (MSW) or higher degree from a regionally accredited or CSWE-accredited college or university or an equivalent foreign degree as determined by CSWE’s Foreign Equivalency Determination service

Arizona LCSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical Level Examination

Field Requirement: 3,200 hours of supervised work experience in no less than 24 months, including 1,600 hours of direct client contact and a minimum of 100 hours of clinical supervision

Fee: $250 application fee, $250 license fee, $260 ASWB examination fee

Additional Information: A fingerprint card or a fingerprint clearance card is required with every application.

Endorsement: Available upon board approval

License Renewal: Renewal is required every two years. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 30 contact hours of continuing education and payment of a $350 renewal fee.

Arizona LMSW

Arizona LMSW Education Requirement: Master of Social Work (MSW) or higher degree from a regionally accredited or CSWE-accredited college or university or an equivalent foreign degree as determined by CSWE’s Foreign Equivalency Determination service

Arizona LMSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master’s Level Examination

Arizona LBSW Education Requirement: Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a regionally accredited or CSWE-accredited college or university or an equivalent foreign degree as determined by CSWE’s Foreign Equivalency Determination service

Arizona LBSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Examination
