Louisiana law recognizes three classes of social workers: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Registered Social Worker (LBSW). The requirements are as follows:

Lousiana LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)

Louisiana LCSW Education Requirement: Master of Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited program

Louisiana LCSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical Level Examination

Field Requirement: 5,760 hours of post-graduate social work practice (3,840 hours of post-graduate experience should be under the supervision of a board-approved clinical supervisor)

Fee: $100 application fee, $260 ASWB examination fee, $38 background check

Additional Information: Criminal background check required

Endorsement: Available through board approval to applicants certified or licensed in a state or territory with license and registration standards equivalent to Louisiana who have passed the appropriate ASWB level exam

License Renewal: Renewal is required every year. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 20 clock hours of continuing education and payment of a $75 renewal fee.

Louisiana LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker)

Louisiana LMSW Education Requirement: Master of Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited program

Louisiana LMSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master’s Level Examination

Field Requirement: None

Fee: $75 application fee, $230 ASWB examination fee, $38 criminal background check

Additional Information: Criminal background check required

Endorsement: Available through board approval to applicants certified or licensed in a state or territory with license and registration standards equivalent to Louisiana who have passed the appropriate ASWB level exam

License Renewal: Renewal is required every year. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 20 clock hours of continuing education, including 3 hours in ethics and payment of a $50 renewal fee.

Louisiana RSW (Registered Social Worker)

Louisiana RSW Education Requirement: Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program

Louisiana RSW Exam: None

Field Requirement: None

Fee: $50 application fee, $38 criminal background check

Additional Information: Criminal background check required

Endorsement: Available through board approval to applicants certified or licensed in a state or territory with license and registration standards equivalent to Louisiana who have passed the appropriate ASWB level exam

License Renewal: Renewal is required every year. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 20 clock hours of continuing education, including 3 hours in ethics and payment of a $25 renewal fee.

In order to become a licensed social work practitioner in Louisiana, you will need to complete prerequisite coursework, examination requirements, and, in some cases, supervised work requirements.
