Online Masters in Social Work (MSW)
Programs for 2020

Master of Social Work degrees are ideal for people who want to make a career change, as well as social workers who want to take their career to the next level. Attending traditional on-campus classes is not an option for everyone, especially those with a full-time job. To cater to this problem, a growing number of accredited schools have designed online Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. Students enrolled in an accredited MSW online program will often enjoy the same educational opportunities as their on-campus counterparts.

What is a Masters in Social Work?

A master’s degree in social work (MSW) is an advanced degree that equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to enhance the well-being of individuals and large client populations, particularly those who are vulnerable.

An online MSW degree typically takes two years to complete and requires a minimum of 800 hours of fieldwork.

Currently, the MSW degree is considered terminal degree for social work, though there are higher degrees available such as a Doctor of Social Work (DSW). Compared to a bachelor’s in social work (BSW), an MSW may offer opportunities for specialization and career advancement. While a DSW is recommended for those who want to teach or conduct research, the path to this degree is often lengthier and costlier than the MSW track.

Choose the Best Online Accredited MSW Program For You

There are many online MSW programs available to you, from full-time and part-time options to programs that incorporate flexible fieldwork and offer specialty areas of your interest. When choosing a program, it is important to make sure that the program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

CSWE-accredited schools have gone through a rigorous process administered by the accrediting institution, that ensures that the school meets their standards and is qualified to teach students. More so, CSWE accredited programs may better prepare social workers to become licensed in their state, as majority of state regulations around the profession require it.

Online MSW Program Concentrations

Online MSW programs offer a variety of program concentrations from Mental Health & Trauma to Policy Practice and Advocacy. Depending on your concentration, you could focus on programs at the broad level or become more granular with your career. Most programs are spliced into categories called macro, mezzo, or micro social work, which is used to define the scope of the work involved. Learn more about each of these categories below:

Macro social work – Macro level social workers use their MSW to make large scale impact in the field, whether it be at the state level or even nationally. They may look to solve issues and implement change at the root, instead of counseling clients affected at a personal level. Macro social workers usually don’t work with clients on a clinical basis, though they may conduct research to gain public input when looking at how to formulate new programs or change existing ones. Macro social workers may design and implement social services programs, examine the cause of social issues within their communities, and advocate for policy changes at a government level.

Mezzo social work – The work of mezzo level social workers involves enacting change within smaller groups or institutions and is usually thought to be focused on more "mid-size" groups that fall between the macro and micro side of the practice spectrum. For example, mezzo social workers may organize local health or education initiatives.

While these professionals have frequent contact with community members, they don’t always provide the same clinical or personal treatment as social workers who only work at the micro level. Oftentimes, those involved in the mezzo level of social work are micro social work employees who are providing a service within their community. Social workers often need to fill multiple roles as demand for their services remains high.

Micro social work – This work is often identified as the most common type of practice that involves work with an individual or a family. Training in micro social work aims to give social workers the knowledge required to be able to identify problems that individual clients may have and support them appropriately. Micro social workers may help clients with challenges relating to housing, employment, family, financial stability, mental health, medical issues, and more.

MSW Degree Curriculum

With technological advancements, most online social work curricula are now identical to the traditional in-class curricula. Depending on if you are enrolled as a standard or advanced standing student, most online MSW programs range from 12 to 32 months until completion. In the first year, core courses are the main focus. Foundational courses may include:

  • Sociocultural Concepts
  • Social Welfare Policy
  • Human Behavior/Psychology
  • Community Practice

During the second year, students begin to specialize and identify areas to begin fieldwork. The fieldwork component is an important part of the MSW degree, as it gives students thousands of Hours’ worth of hands-on experience within their particular specialization. This fieldwork can be through internships or a specific number of Hours within certified organizations, ranging from schools to hospitals, and more.

Should I Get a Master’s Degree in Social Work?

Many people choose to earn an MSW to learn more about the intricacies of social work and to hold a graduate-level degree that offers a foothold into an advanced career. It takes time, dedication and finances, but could be the right choice for you depending on the work you hope to specialize in.

People who currently hold a BSW degree or work in similar fields and backgrounds, often make the choice to earn their MSW. You can still have a successful career in social work without an MSW but having this advanced degree may increase your chances of landing a higher-paying and more specialized position. Before you go back to school for your MSW, research your future job opportunities. Will having an MSW provide you with the opportunity to advance your career within a field of study that interests you? If so, an MSW can be a great option.

Potential Benefits of a Master's in Social Work

The range of opportunities within the social work field is vast, and one of the benefits of an MSW is that it offers a social worker the opportunity to specialize and advance within a specific field. For example, to obtain a position and grow within a clinical setting, a person is required to have an MSW for licensure. An MSW can also offer graduates the education and experience to begin their very own practice and specialize in their areas of interest.

In addition, social work is a fast-growing field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that job growth of social workers is expected to increase by 11% from 2018 to 2028. That’s more than double the average growth rate for all occupations. The median annual pay for social workers also surpasses that of the overall labor market. In 2018, the median annual salary for social workers was $49,470, according to the BLS. The highest 10% of social workers earned more than $81,400.

How Do I Get a Masters Degree in Social Work?

For those who are ready to earn an MSW, the work ahead of them may be both challenging and gratifying. To get started on your educational journey, you can research CSWE-accredited social work schools with a good reputation. Alternatively, you can settle on a specialty area and find out which programs offer your desired concentration. You may also want to consider schools that offer part-time study options or follow the hybrid learning model.

You’ll then want to focus on what it takes to get into your program of choice and ensure that you have a competitive edge among your fellow applicants.

Admissions Requirements for MSW Programs

Admission requirements for online MSW programs will differ between schools and programs, however, most schools request the following:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited school
  • (If pursuing an advanced MSW program, a BSW is likely required for admission)
  • A minimum GPA requirement, often 3.0
  • Official transcripts
  • A personal statement/letters of recommendation (amount varies by school)
  • An application fee (amount varies by school)
  • Technical requirements to access any online courses (personal computer, internet access, etc.)

Today, many MSW programs do not require a GRE test score. If your undergraduate was not in social work, then your MSW program track may vary from the track of a student with a BSW, adding core requirements that you may not have taken during your undergraduate studies.

What Can I Do with a Masters in Social Work?

MSW education will cover a broad range of social and cultural subjects along with thousands of Hours of hands-on experience to prepare you for your post-graduate career. The career opportunities for a social worker are extremely diverse, and can be rewarding too. There are a number of social worker careers that range from clinical practice to roles in the government or corporate sector. If you decide to earn your MSW you are also just one step closer to becoming a licensed social worker.

With an MSW, you'll be able to take advantage of more job opportunities and expand your career into new areas. Depending on the state you want to work in, you may need to pursue a license. To earn this specialization, you need to have your MSW and also pass the Association of Social Work Board's Master's Exam. With your MSW and licensure ( LCSW, LICSW, or LMSW-C) you will be able to specialize in your field and even open and work for your own independent practice.

Social Work Organizations and Accreditation

Students who are interested in enrolling in an online MSW program have a vast array of organizations available, providing support and continuing education. These organizations also offer their members resources pertaining certifications, events and networking opportunities, and much more. Some examples of social work organizations at the macro, mezzo, and, micro levels are:

National Association of Social Workers (NASW) – Known as one of the largest social work organizations, the NASW has about 120,000 members and offers guidance and research forocial workers, but also advocates for them.

Social Welfare Action Alliance (SWAA) – This 35-year-old national organization has chapters in New York and Oregon, and even offers social workers to start a chapter anywhere in the country. Each chapter determines their own agenda and provides forums for discussion around local and national social work needs and issues.

Association of Veterans Affairs Social Workers (AVASW) – This professional association encourages the development of social work services for veterans by sharing information with practitioners in the field as well as their client groups. The AVASW believes transparency enhances the effectiveness of VA social work.

International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG) – This group works alongside social workers engaged in group work. This member-driven organization strives to promote excellence in local and international group work practices through education, field instruction, research, and publication.

American Clinical Social Work Association (ACSWA) – This national network of psychosocial care professionals is dedicated to providing the most current information, resources, updates, and alerts on emerging education and research best practices in social work and behavioral/mental healthcare. ACSWA is dedicated to providing clinical social workers with networking opportunities.

Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) – When you begin to search for the best online MSW program for you, make sure the one you choose is accredited. CSWE is the accrediting body for many schools that offer online MSW programs. They ensure that the educational institutions adhere to their set of standards for social work curricula.
