Standards for Clinical Social Work in Social Work Practice

1. Ethics and values: Clinical social workers practice in alignment with the profession’s values and use the NASW (2021) Code of Ethics to guide ethical decision-making.
2. Specialized practice skills and interventions: Clinical social workers demonstrate the knowledge and skill to provide effective, evidence-informed clinical interventions for the populations they serve.
3. Referrals: Clinical social workers coordinate care and connect clients to appropriate services and supports when referral is in the client’s best interest.
4. Accessibility to clients: Clinical social workers set and communicate clear policies for availability, including how emergencies are handled.
5. Privacy and confidentiality: Clinical social workers protect confidentiality and explain its limits, consistent with law, ethics, and informed consent.
6. Supervision and consultation: Clinical social workers obtain appropriate supervision and consultation to strengthen competence and protect client welfare (and follow supervision best-practice guidance where relevant).

Requirements for Clinical Social Work Licensing

States assign several titles to the clinical social work profession; some states use the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) title. Some clinical social work licensing requirements may include:

1. Graduation from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program.
2. Supervised clinical training hours.
3. Completion of the appropriate licensing exam.

Educational Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) can provide a basis for supervised levels of social work. Most states require a master’s degree in social work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited institution to become an LMSW. There are also online MSW programs that don’t require a GRE for admission. After graduation, applicants for a license must register as an associate clinical social worker or similar, depending on state requirements, to initiate the required field practice education.

Some states might require additional coursework based on a review of the undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Some examples of topics for additional coursework include human sexuality, detecting child abuse and elder abuse prevention.

Supervised clinical experience requirements vary by state, but many jurisdictions require post-MSW supervised clinical work, often around 3,000 hours completed over a multi-year period (and sometimes defined in years and/or client-contact hours instead of total hours).
