Requirements for Clinical Social Work Licensing

States assign several titles to the clinical social work profession; some states use the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) title. Some clinical social work licensing requirements may include:

  1. Graduation from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program.
  2. Supervised clinical training hours.
  3. Completion of the appropriate licensing exam.

Educational Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) can provide a basis for supervised levels of social work. Most states require a master’s degree in social work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited institution to become an LMSW. There are also online MSW programs that don’t require a GRE for admission. After graduation, applicants for a license must register as an associate clinical social worker or similar, depending on state requirements, to initiate the required field practice education.

Some states might require additional coursework based on a review of the undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Some examples of topics for additional coursework include human sexuality, detecting child abuse and elder abuse prevention.

Accreditation is an important element of the educational requirement, and it is a factor that applicants and students might want to consider early in the process of selecting a school or online MSW program. The CSWE is the accepted and respected accreditation for clinical social work programs. CSWE accreditation has achieved broad acceptance among educational institutions, federal and state governments, public sector institutions, the nonprofit sector and the private sector.

Supervised Practice

Supervised clinical experience requirements vary by state, but many jurisdictions require post-MSW supervised clinical work, often around 3,000 hours completed over a multi-year period (and sometimes defined in years and/or client-contact hours instead of total hours).

This supervised experience helps future clinical social workers build advanced clinical skills, apply assessment and intervention methods in real-world settings, and learn professional collaboration under qualified supervision. In many states, completing supervised clinical experience is a key step toward clinical/independent licensure; because requirements differ, confirm the specific hour counts, timeframes, and supervision rules using your state board and ASWB’s laws and regulations resources.

What’s the difference between an MSW vs. an LCSW degree?

A MSW degree is a Master of Social Work degree. An LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, which is the title some states use to indicate a social worker who can practice independently of supervision and/or provide clinical services. Additionally, there is also a difference between becoming an LMSW and a LCSW.
